Yes. Keep them for those who wants and let's make it that you can turn it off to white/grey.

Would it be possible to think of another way to honor (public) donors? Perhaps you could put an elegant frame around their avatar. Or give them a special chat room, we do have chat rooms now after all. Either way, since you haven't implemented donors having colored names yet, if you change it now you maybe won't have to undo anything, right?
