Does that mean those who passionately believe in their religion are mentally ill? By your definition this would be essentially true; their disciplines of faith may interfere with their ability to function well with the rest of society, and have vivid beliefs that may be deemed completely delusional.
The problem is the goal of these things.
The goal is to help society, but what is the goal of society? To make life more comfortable. You can't do this with unstable and delusional people.
So how come they missed this? Its because they want to make life more comfortable for everyone at the same time. Which is impossible.

They missed it, because they are unstable and delusional. When you take a look at some of the early psychologists, as you are aware, they were not exactly rowing with both oars in the water either. Blind leading the blind based on theories that were pulled out of their assholes.
"the official definition of mental illness is that it has to effect your life to a point where you can't function, or have trouble functioning in society."
Precisely. Through hard work they've aimed to change society to allow them to be treated as a part of it instead of as some sort of aberration. Other disorders and ailments try to do similar things, like chronic obesity.
I really think the term "disorder" ought to be replaced with something else from the negative stigma attached to it. Soon enough there won't even be a DSM if people keep feeling offended by the term. I read about "disorders" not necessarily to mean "freaks" so much as "differences".
Yes they are and have you seen what those passionate people do? And they do it because of their crazy believes in a book.
I really really really can't understand it. How could you possibly read a book and trust it absolutely? That is insane. You have to be insane, or influenced/manipulated into it when you were young. And influence/manipulation can lead to delusions so it can lead to mental illness, but its clearly not severe in that case.
