A Pity. We Were Such a Good Invention
They amputated
Your thighs off my hips.
As far as I'm concerned
They are all surgeons. All of them.
They dismantled us
Each from the other.
As far as I'm concerned
They are all engineers. All of them.
A pity. We were such a good
And loving invention.
An aeroplane made from a man and wife.
Wings and everything.
We hovered a little above the earth.
We even flew a little.
~ Yehuda Amichai
This is one of my favorite poems. It really touches me in a way I can't explain and I think of it every time I am in a moment of needing to permanently walk away or watching someone else do it. I am not only talking about a romantic relationship I mean friendships and other kinds of relationships. When I first found it I thought of my mother and how we never bonded (at birth) or could make it work. The potential is always there though... Alway there.
