Fludd-y-doodle-Dee.

^ That shit is old as Dust yet it never ceases to make me feel warm & fuzzy when some new kid comes upon it at the right age.   You made my day kiddo.  I grin with delight.

It's like being high on the universe, or something.

"Sacred drunkenness" would be the rough translation.

Why? Why religion?

People are quick to slap the religion label on anything abstract, whether or not it has anything to do with ideology.  It's a way of anthropomorphising the beast (to make it less intimidating to the mind).  Semantics really.

The particle revolution is on the brink of closing full circle with the gnostics, the Ouroboros biting its arse-end and all that. Loving every bit of it.  Why? Cuz it's playful.  Beautiful.

"Do you ever get the feeling that the universe is like a beautiful piece of machinery, a computer operating perfectly, according to some great design?"
Even as a follower of determinism, I'd say it's far from perfect or beautiful.

"And no matter what happens, the machine can never fail, for it is a cosmic piece of art."

That depends on how you define "fail" in this case.

"All of the doings of humanity and everything that happens in the universe contribute to the beauty of the machine's functioning."
From far enough away it doesn't seem too different from studying things like ants. From up close it's another monster entirely.

"And it is beautiful because no one is running the machine, no one even necessarily created it, it exists as a kind of cosmic monument to some great truth, a work of comedy even, a testament to the hilarity of everything."
Comedy?

"Where does this religious feeling come from? It's like hardwired into the brain or something."

Basically. Even without more mainstream faiths, stuff like Shamanism is likely to come from nothing. People typically need it.

"Basically all cultures have or had some kind of religion (disregard atheists, they suck cocks)"
Atheism is basically a religion anyway.

Do you ever get the feeling that the universe is like a beautiful piece of machinery, a computer operating perfectly, according to some great design? And no matter what happens, the machine can never fail, for it is a cosmic piece of art. All of the doings of humanity and everything that happens in the universe contribute to the beauty of the machine's functioning. And it is beautiful because no one is running the machine, no one even necessarily created it, it exists as a kind of cosmic monument to some great truth, a work of comedy even, a testament to the hilarity of everything.

I think that this feeling is the cause of religion. Or it is religion. I think that religion began as a feeling, and then it turned into non-religious things, for example Scientology.

Where does this religious feeling come from? It's like hardwired into the brain or something. Basically all cultures have or had some kind of religion (disregard atheists, they suck cocks). There was one video I posted ages ago about it, here it is again: thebrainhack.com.

It's like being high on the universe, or something.

Atheism is basically a religion anyway.

Exactly. And of the bigoted kind.

Bigotry isn't a matter of religion, it's a matter of the one using it.

Some hold Atheism in an "Occam's Razor" approach.

Some hold Atheism in an "Occam's Razor" approach.

"Some Sayâ„¢"   At least 4 separate people on separate occasions called yours truly (my cunt) "Occam's Razor" on PF (don't make me dig up the posts) - yet here i am ..bushy & bright-eyed as ever.

Agreed, bigotry is more of a personal predilection than a received denomination.

However, i see it a lot more prevalent in the so-called 'humanioræ' than in the natural sciences (mind you, the latter heavily depending on paycheques. But still...)
