We are the result of our experiences, that includes our fears, and we should refuse to expose ourselves to unjustified fears that our stupid subconscious mind wont be able to distinguish from as real or not.

Fear is a weakness, and developing fears for fun is stupid, and humans who do it to themselves I think are a bit simple. They think it makes them braver, but I disagree. you have no memory of a monster jumping out at you until you see it in some movie, and then imagine it, in the middle of the night, and scare yourself.

People who don't watch scary movies are much less inclined to be afraid of the dark.

Stop watching scary movies people!

so you're saying we're only allowed to watch happy things all the time?

like kitten videos on youtube?

not that I have anything against watching kitten videos, mind you

I'm not "developing fears for fun". I watch horror movies for basically the same reason that I watch all other movies - they are entertaining. I watch some stupid thing and feel mildly scared for a bit, and then I turn off the TV and go back to whatever the fuck I was doing. If horror movies actually incited some serious fear in me, I don't think that I would watch them.

That being said, I don't even watch TV or movies unless everyone else is going to the movies or something, so it's kind of a moot point.

Most have some sort of internal thingamabob that turns away from threats.  It works like magnets when handled a certain way, you know, when they repel from each other.  Seems to me the same type force on a much smaller scale.  And then some have that force muted.  Or better, they can work around it to have some fun.  The movies play on that thingamabob to entertain and make money, that's all.

If you didn't have it, you might not care to move at all.

You are much better off watchin' it bunches.  Desensitize.

watching gore to desensitize (idk why you would feel the need) is one thing, but watching fake situations like a monster or alien or w.e is just experiencing something that you could otherwise never experience. i watched the grudge once, and now im afraid of attics. not because of rational thinking, but because we humans have less control over our mind than we think, and when i go into an attic, i start picturing the grudge, and my heart gets going and my experiences of the past, my subconsciousness cant separate what is real and what isnt, and so ya.

we are the result of our experiences. that is the key thing to take away from this

Some horror flicks don't scare but are entertaining as hell... Like The Shining, Orphan or The Omen.

I'd argue what we fear most is the unknown and what we can't control. Horror movies might put a face on monsters that scare us but they're not the true origin of those fears, they're simply a result of our psychological wiring.

As the great Gary Busey would put it:

I'm pretty sure most people recover from the "traumatic experiences" after a while. That's my case, at least. I've never even had trouble sleeping because of a scary movie.
