I have a habit of asking people about their phobias. I was until recently under the assumption that everyone fears either spiders or snakes. One guy I met didn't fear either of them however, but said wild animals (predators) scare him. Luckily for him there aren't too many of those in the city. I'm pretty sure no one is completely devoid of phobias though. One could also ask how it can be a phobia to be afraid of something that is dangerous, like heights for instance? It is after all pretty advantageous to be afraid of something that could potenially kill you. Ok, one can be aware of the theoretical danger of something, but not feel it. Fear is useful though because without it we tend to do stupid things. So I guess all phobias are not really phobias at all, but maybe just remnants of fears that were useful in the past. Like the fear of snakes... Can it really be considerad a phobia in a country were poisonous snakes are common? Your thoughts on this?
I'm not afraid of snakes either but I avoid higly poisonous snakes if I can. I think they are beautiful creatures though and I've held and touched big snakes on several occasions. Cockroaches I don't like but I'm not sure if I've seen one irl. If I have it must have been in a zoo or something.
Storm,
Grew up in the country. One stop light town only after I was ten years young. Snakes weren't crap. Ran over em' on my bike, four wheeler, you hear. You learn how they move. Folks afraid of what they don't understand. And I'm sure some afraid cause they just never can mess with it. Only one thing ever scared this one. You ready for it? Cockaroaches. They do poop you hear. Are they in the food chain? Someone kill em' all. Don't get all running away when they near, but extra careful when killing em'. So yeah, that's mine.

I thought it wasn't called a phobia if the fear was rational. Most spiders or mice can't hurt you, neither can heights unless you jump or fall, neither can closed spaces. Fearing a nuclear war is definitely not a phobia, nor is it fearing poisonous snakes. If you jump 3 feet high around just any snake though, it's a phobia.
Everyone has fears, but not everyone has phobias. I don't have a phobia as far as I know.
