Trends in Television

So, I remember there being a huge trend towards reality TV around the turn of the century. Maybe the rise of reality TV game shows where people compete in bizarre situations. Prior to that, there were a lot of deep felt emotional or politically intriguing utopian shows, you know, like star treks, or perhaps the comedy series that attempted to deal with real human emotions and relationships, that sort of carries over to the big bang theory, right?

What are the major trends in television these days, or are they the same as they've always been?

I wonder, compared to 1990s television, on average, would you say there is more sex, more violence, more belligerence, or is it more along the lines of utpoian star trek stuff?

Last thing I watched that I remember ....was the Simpsons...and that was a very long time ago. As far as series go. Other than that....TV meh  somebody else's fantasy, unreal romance, droll gore and a few good mysteries. When asking a person what have you been doing? And I am am regaled with stories about movies watched =  I was rotting on the sofa.

nod head smile politely and as a few inane questions, then bail...

Oh well...everybody's different.

TV and the media = Brain rot.

I get my news on the forums... . Do a google peek....and Voila...same crap as 20 years ago. Nothing new, just new  characters. Not unlike SC by the looks of things.

I used to love watching the history and discovery channel growing up as a kid, but now even they are just filled with petty reality shows. I stopped watching tv around 2-3 years ago and even then it was all war documentaries.

Yeah, I've seen south park.

So these are generally dramas, correct?

Sort of along the lines of mini feature films meets day time soap opera?

I have no idea. I use a free open-source media platform, so I don't watch T.V... But some of my favorite shows are/were: Arrested Development, Archer, South Park, Crazy Land, Vice, The Inexplicable Universe, documentaries of all sorts, Mafia's Greatest Hits, The Sopranos and most recently, Game of Thrones and best of all VIKINGS! :D

No. War documentaries aren't propaganda when they're held in an informative manner. It only leads to bias if you see your own nation's battles glorified and to the channels credit most of the time the wars never included the US to begin with. Which is accurate and relative considering the US is a very young country when compared to the centuries of warring nations. Looking at just American wars would be scratching the surface of the history of battle.

There's definitely more deviant sex, but while the violence has become more graphic, I'd say it is present in the same amounts.

The trends seem fairly the same, I see.  The ever changing yet most consistent trend is to push the envelope.  Most story lines haven't change in a very long time (pre TV), our society uses technology to push those stories to the extreme...

I wouldn't say this is exclusive to the art of television...

Yep....it's like a propaganda machine to rile the the masses up to get war on the brain. Makes a lot of money all around.
