What kinds of uncontrollable behaviors? What has such dire consequences?

Everything has a "fix" or a solution except death. I always try to remember that when moving forward.

That doesn't make any sense, it's not like there's only one moral code. As opinions form or change so do the morals attached to them. Why wouldn't one change?

"I don't ever cross over my moral code."

Does it ever change?

My only moral code is to try not to be unfair to those that life has already been fairly unfair to,and when I have to cross it my justification would be that it was simply made to be that way.

I think that's a pretty sensible view.

I don't believe a moral code changes. That is duplicitous.

Nothing.

In my opinion lack of motivation or any other unproductive mindset is not the lack of character but the result of mismanagement. Most of the time when I get unmotivated is because I stopped following my routine.

These mindsets are positive feedback loops. They change your thinking and behavior in such a way that you only chase the next instant reward. This leads to bad feelings like guilt or anger about yourself which increases the need for a sense of achievement.

Beating yourself up because you get stuck in them isn't helpful at all. You just associate the situation with even more negative feelings which makes it harder and harder over time to get out of it and ends in serious anxiety and stress responses.

Don't try to reason with yourself because your whole thinking is biased towards not doing anything. It's likely you will just convince yourself that you need another break.

The best way to get out of them is to find a ritual or thought that changes your mood reliably and breaks the loop.

What helped me most was to realize that motivation follows action and not the other way around. If I want to be motivated I have to work for it. Otherwise motivation will show up only occasionally.

Edit: Breaking of a moral code is another story.

When you cross your own moral code or feel guilt what is it that you do to atone for it?

 Systematic,

It's a rare time when my insides hurt for someone.  And during those rare times, guilt has to do with the hurt party not enjoying it right along with me.

Ret,

Really enjoy the attitude you got going here.  You should speak up more often, you hear. I recently quit drinking booze because it was gettin' to gosh darn hard to drink so much to feel nothin' at all if that makes some sense.  Now my sleep is all in the toilet.  It's shit.  So your words relate a lot to what is going on here.  "...Motivation follows action..." I like that.
