"In some cases, Demons may have been mental illness, if this plane of existence is void of parallel dimension interaction."
Ah yes. In those times I imagine all sorts of personality disorders were just blamed on demons. I'm also interested in seeing if some of these demons were created or inspired because of any disorders.
Naw, I know from experience where the large misconceptions are.
The succubus and incubus are clearly manifestations of the mind.
In our world, no matter what, those are seen as mental illnesses. The shadow people, you name it.
However, you can't rule out the possibility of some type of extra dimensional interaction.
What I'm thinking, is there are two giant fluid sacks in the brain.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ventricular_system

Was reading that the contents are largely filled with non-essential amino acids. All the amino acids our body produces and refines from other proteins and stuff, as opposed to the essential amino acids which our body does not produce.
Anyways, there it is. Two giant fluid filled sacks in the brain. (BTW, when those are enlarged it is a signal of schitzoprenia)
What if we cannot figure out how the brain works, because the water sacks in our brain are somehow receptors into another dimension?
We evolved from water, so, what if intelligence somehow exists in water?
Clearly those who are mentally ill experience these interactions with other dimensions. Sure, it could be a malfunction of the brain which is the obvious answer, however, seeing as we cannot fully understand how the brain works in full, let alone the human consciousness, perhaps, seeing as they are totally reminiscent of something you might call a "receptor", as even our modern means to catch and transmit electromagnetic signals largely resemble devices which look as such.
That perhaps there is a connection to the spirut world, and the connection to the spirit world is what causes mental illness.
See. You can twist it around a little and accept both paradigms.

Oh wait a second, that is exactly what you said. Yeah, I totally see that. I don't know if I read your stance and forgot, or if I jumped the gun.
Whatever, yeah, I am agnostic.
