I tend to listen to how it's roughly structured and balanced in place of "feeling" music, but that's not really by choice. I have trouble comprehending lyrics in songs beyond picking out the vowels if their diction isn't above a certain line unless there's no other instruments, so I can't usually get lost in the lyrics either. Still prone to songs getting stuck in my head if the beat's catchy enough and somewhat loops onto itself.
If it's not that it's likely just background noise to break the silence, the choice in genre or artist being closer to setting or complimenting the scene than trying to frame my mood into something like it's just a series of switches.
Good music brings me on an emotional rollercoaster but I mostly use it to manipulate my moods (i.e bring me from angry to calm by banging some gangsta funk from 90's), or to dispel the silence as turncoat said (this boredom and emptiness got a nigga almost suicidal)
I've been seeing people talk about how music makes them feel for a very long time, but never thought anything of it until just now. Does music really affect your mood? Metal fans talk about how it makes them want to break a chair over someone, EDM fans want to dance to it and hedonize to it, classical fans want to relax, etc. I get nothing from any sort of music, song, or artist. Is this a misunderstanding on my part? Like that thread about posting music that fits your mood, I understand how music can FIT into a mood, but to actually stir one? It's a mystery. I listen to music only to relate to other people to be honest. That's pretty much it. I can find studies saying yes and no to these questions, I'm more interested in what any of you have to say.
tl;dr dont give a shit about music wbu
There's actual science behind this.
Listening to your favorite songs actually triggers your brain to release an allotted amount of dopamine into your system. This is what allows music to alter your moods, considering dopamine is also released when you have an orgasm or do heroin. It's what compels people to do such things in the first place.
Ever listen to a song and a certain part gives you the chills/goosebumps? Yep.
