Hm?
"None of them are compared to 3d multi player shooters."
There's more than that that can be impressive. 2D is a medium that can be masterfully done in the right hands, and there's definitely more than shooters and multiplayer for impressive graphics. Even beyond the graphics themselves those displays look all sorts of cluttered and messy.
The dreamcast/gamecube one? I tried that but lacked the means for online play so... I soloed it instead. It was fun for gameplay (even if repetitive when soloing), but I can see how it'd be loads better with other people.
I've done a lot of multiplayer online games (offline as well, more fun to verse people in person), since ones that are about the single player don't last that long and the AIs can be picked on by testing their parameters, while people online meanwhile learn and make human mistakes. Some games though have a learning curve that's backbreaking for online play with little to no ranking system, like online fighting games have become overtime.
I've played Tribes as well, the jetpack mechanics being reworked for Ascend was a very nice touch (when compared to Aerial Assault anyway). I prefer playing as the Technician in Ascend though, something about it feels more natural, but it's arguable if playing that class is really anything at all like the others.
I used to play more MMORPGs back when people I knew played them as well, but without them it feels too lonely. PVP's all I really enjoy in them now. There's some fun ones that can be done solo, with a group, or queuing into a group of unknowns.
I really ought to start going back to LAN parties. Nothing like killing a dude in a game and hearing an audible "AUGH!" from a person instead of a headset.
The game play from one 2d to the next is still fairly similar.
Sure you could make it real time, like warcraft, but most are turn based.
The graphics in a 2d turn based MMORPG aren't really that important.
I don't play them enough, but I used to play them alot.
I think the only game that really impressed me was sega's phantasy star. I just can't be arsed to commit months to "level up" anymore.
And I mean phantasy star on the original sega. I haven't played an MMORPG that made any difference whether it was a multi player environment or a single player environment. It seems like novelty to me to have multiple real players, until you get into shooter games like Tribes. That was basically the last online multiplayer game I played and liked.
No, but I used to play http://daimonin.net
When I was playing it the admin was running it out of a University server in Germany.
It's open source code and probably what alot of the MMORPGs are built on.
It's C, Lua, and I think someone was building a Java 3D client. So it's interesting in more than one way. It's got a map editor, I think they all do, right?
The gameplay is very similar to Ultima IV. Most of them are. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_IV:_Quest_of_the_Avatar
Looks pretty dead now, maybe 10 players playing at most. It was a little busier when I was playing. Maybe 50+. Never that big.
Turncoat Said,
Doesn't look too impressive.
