It's so impractical though!
"I'm surprised this isn't just a hoax."
You went down the same path of disbelief and research that I did. I posted it after seeing that it wasn't a hoax. I suppose the fact that it isn't as "bad ass" as in Science Fiction films, is why it is plausible.
"How is this not getting more skepticism? Perhaps because some form of Kuratas does seem to exist."
If they can be purchased, they can be re-wired, and re-suited. Just you wait.
Lets see... buttons on the front open it, can be operated remotely ("anyone can easily opperate the Kuratas"), the arms seem super sluggish, runs off fuel instead of power cells, auto-aim dependency, smoking is ill advised (with explosion implications), phone access...
Based on past fiction anyway, all of that seems kind of horrible, but anything that's steps towards us having Armored Cores is a good step. The day that the arms can be opperated from moving your own arms in the same ways is when the fantasy and reality areas will be more closely bridged (Avatar, Real Steel, etc). Fiction's overly expressed that external control is safer than opperating from the inside, so that direction'd be better in the long run anyway.
The smile thing would in a creepy fashion overtime condition the pilot to be more comfortable with firing. Smiling releases endorphins, and the association between smiling and firing would likely lead to some sort of mixed association with prolonged use. I'm surprised this isn't just a hoax.
