Most people in power play unfairly for a reason.

I'm aware of that, but we're not talking about paper pushers who only fight with words, a pen and the power of money. This is about physical fighting.

It's different.

He needs to make a show out of it. You'd become a part of the propaganda machine if you were too obvious. Pulling an Indiana Jones on you completely defeats the point, since it's not about winning, it's about appearances. It'd be unfair odds, but they'd be shrouded instead of blatant.

Actually, it's about staging fights in the name of pushing a framework. It's not about honor, it's about results.

After my image is respected and feared I'd settle down and watch my justiciars carry out the rest of the gladiator games for my amusement, make it a religious event where everyone would want a chance to have the glory of battle. Before the gladiator defeats the other he must have my approval, the classic thumbs up or thumbs down will work. Criminals will be dealt with in the gladiator arena as well. I'll be seen as the wielder of life and death, a godlike religious figure to my people that controls life itself. I'll raise my children, appoint them into office, they'll carry out my image to keep their deity status and wealth.

It was a part of the plan initially. Did you not read it all before you began making assumptions?

Considering they don't have internet or television in this post apocalyptic scenario, my gladiator games would be the only source of entertainment. I would be the media, I wouldn't have to control it if my performance in the arena is superb.

Of course, but as history has shown there's no real way to stop it completely from happening. It's why i want them to see me as a mentor and why I take the time to train them personally. It also helps that this religion I'm running is very strong on order and honor. Taking apt preventative steps is really all you can do.

This is where the real trouble arises. I wouldn't cause bloodshed, it would only weaken my image. The only viable option would be to challenge this justiciar in the arena fairly. It runs the risk of me dying but not more so than fighting a civil war and when I win it'll instantly relate the fallen justiciar to the criminals that also met their ends in the arena. Silencing any of their sympathizers while bolstering discipline in my ranks and increasing my religious influence greatly amongst the common people.

What about books?

I don't believe that. I honestly think it'd take inhumane tactics to accomplish it, but it could be done.

Isn't being inscribed in the annals of world history not the ultimate ego stroke? You act as if you wouldn't want to be seen as a god.

I don't give a fuck about being in the annals of world history. The only thing that matters to me is my pleasure while I'm alive to enjoy it. I'm not gonna give two shits if people remember me or not when I'm dead.

Being a god, feeling like a god, is an illusion. It's just a powerful short-term illusion and nothing more. To believe in it long-term is a delusion.

"What about books?"

Let's hope this apocalypse destroyed them all, I can see the bible being a huge threat. I'd never openly criticize books, it would instantly turn away the more useful members of this community. It'll be task like this I'll appoint to my more observant justiciar having him get a detailed report of what books come in from scavenging missions.

We already beat people who oppose our will to death in an arena. If not pain, public humiliation in an honor based society should be more than enough.

Do you think anyone would object to me not feeding enemies that are meant to die within the week? 

Rule number 14: There will be no wasting perfect food. All enemies will be spit roasted on capture, following a quick purification process in the communes saunas. Water and the communes purification herbals and oils are their only food till death.
