Learning from Psychopaths: Q&A With Psychologist Kevin Dutton (article)

No one in prison is sane, they all have a mental illness. Cry me a river they can't prevent it.

The only thing in question is do they go to a mental hospital or prison.

People get labeled to try to avoid the death penalty. Happens here often in America.

What I was responding to is this:

Or you could make the reverse argument for shorter sentences because it’s not really their fault?

 Who cares? lol

Are you insinuating that people in prisons try to label themselves to get reduced sentences?

Every decent lawyer and a good percentage of criminals know that's the worst thing you could do. People get locked up in mental hospitals indefinitely for minor crimes if they're actually crazy. It's suicide to ask for a label like that from the prison system.

More like DAs and parole officers try to label offenders so they won't have to let them out.

The Criminal Code Review Board is allowing Vince Li unsupervised outings from the Selkirk Mental Health Centre into the nearby city of Selkirk. The outings are to start at 30 minutes and increase to full-day trips.

Here is an interesting article I came across:

Learning from Psychopaths: Q&A With Psychologist Kevin Dutton

Any thoughts?

Do you agree with all of his opinions?

Anyone care to give their own opinions on some of those questions. Particularly these two:

- But should psychopaths get longer or shorter sentences when we aren’t talking about death vs. life in prison? You could argue they should be in prison longer because they are clearly dangerous— or you could make the reverse argument for shorter sentences because it’s not really their fault?

- Would you agree that without psychopathic traits, we might lose a lot of leaders and heroes?

The question implies that people go to prison to learn about their mistakes and then come back rehabilitated. And because psychopaths can't learn from mistakes they are supposed to stay there longer.

I think the whole prison system is bullshit. Society approves of it because people imagine it to be a hard punishment which gives them a justice boner plus it keeps the criminals away from them. In my opinion they should rather focus on rehabilitation than just locking people away. I don't know how anyone could think that people who get out of prison are more integrated into society than they were before.

The right way to handle it would be to help a criminal handle his mind. It should depend on the personal progress of an individual when the sentence is over.

they should not focus on rehabilitation, but preventing the crimes before they happen.

i think prison is fine, its punishment not rehabilitation. And it works, people do not want to go to prison, so a lot of them would avoid doing crimes that they would otherwise do.

and those that do the crime anyway get locked for some years and make no trouble during that time

I hope Greyhound Slasher's therapy has brought him far enough along that he can go out on a day pass.

It's only been 7 years.

If he were in general population in Dorchester or Maplehurst he'd be up for parole in another 3 years.
