Google Glass

when i see google glass, i see the first step in what will be the future. basically, once we get it right, we will be able to overlay "holograms" onto reality through a pair of glasses. i read somewhere recently that a very large portion of our mind is dedicated to vision. the virtual universe will literally open up to us spatially and visually when we get the technology down that allows us to use a pair of glasses instead of a computer monitor as we do now.

so some fun examples of applications that i'd love to create for such a device

- object recognition

okay, so obviously it would be very powerful if we can get our device to recognize inanimate objects, because then we could do things like have the device show us the wikipedia article, or perhaps a how-it-works, or maybe a holographic representation of it's innerworkings. i believe by creating a script which compares object visual data to perhaps google images database, and parses the results, it's possible we could return with a high % certainty the name of the object, and relevant information about it. in today's current day and age, it would be slow to perform the calculations, so the glasses wouldn't be as responsive unless the data were already within the software. for this reason, i think glasses will be slow until we achieve quantum computation.

- holographic interpersonal communication

to create an application which would be capable of allowing 2 people to interact with each other, both seeing a hologram of the other, would require the application have data about the physical locations of the individual, and other properties. for this reason, the individuals would need to stand in front of something capable of scanning them, this data would then be transmitted. another fun idea would be to use nanotechnology to place little beacons within our blood system which will then relay to our device the location of all our blood veins and arteries, and as a result our bodies.

- holographic interactive user interfaces

i think if we have a pair of glasses that allow us to overlay a holographic world ontop of reality, it would be natural to allow us to interface with the glasses themselves through the use of holograms. by using a system which has knowledge of our bodies physical locations, we can allow our application to calculate the position of the hologram relative to the individual, and the position of the individuals hand. this will allow the application to respond to the hand's movements.

i know i say my dream is to go to the moon and all, but that doesnt mean i dont have big dreams for this tech business too :P

I'm sure at some point in time, stuff along those lines will find real purpose, such as perhaps guiding wait staff, or helping tourists around places. I thought and still think they should license out the hardware to high end fashion designers so it's loses it's borg personality.

I haven't tried it myself yet, no. Sony will probably kill everyone with their software collections, no?

There is another one made by Facebook, however I cannot remember the name of the device. They sold developer kits first, and the interest was so great, it really took off. Developers really want new stuff, right? Occulus Rift. That's it.

So I used my grandpa's credit card and decided to buy $2,867.45 worth of what ever I wanted at the time. One of those things was google glass. I personally think it's a pretty cool device but needs a lot of work and a lot more apps to become something I would actually want to use on a regular basis. Anybody else try one out?

if im developing it, it wont have adds!!

on another note, in the future we won't have to pay attention while at the wheel. humans are idiots, we all know it. we shouldn't be trusted to steer a 2000 lb car down the road at high speeds. we are stuck with such a risk now due to necessity, but technology is coming that will allow us to remove human error.

-- driving monitor app

an app which observes and monitors the physical location of the individual driver, the vehicle object, it's relative movement and speeds, and objects around it. the app can then monitor the individual's eye movements, and other signals that might lend evidence the person isn't paying attention. during times when the application determines the user to be not paying attention, it will take a greater control over the vehicle, and ensure that the vehicle object never places itself on a course which would allow a collision with less than a 5 second window of error.

by adding beacons of some sort to roads, specifically the center lines, we could even allow the vehicle to stay on the road, and as a fall back, the application would not just trust the road itself, but also signals from other vehicles that this is indeed a safe road, and also physical data signals which would tell the application the road is unobstructed.

Ugh. That sounds like my idea of hell.

I can just imagine the popups every time I pass a pile of dogshit or a can of Pepsi. It's bad enough when I use my on switch and make a choice to go online. But carrying that crap around on my face?

No. Just no.

Don't even get me started on how annoying people are when their texting is blocking sidewalk, grocery store or road traffic. Imagine a life where we're expected to text with a series of rapid eye blinks within a pair of glasses. I can just see the trail of carnage the gadget addicts will leave on public roads while they're blink-sexting with their type n tug buddies instead of paying attention to their driving.

Luna, it's called motion tracking. It's been around for a long time now. The computer can pin down an object where it is in space and track it.

Now they've got robots that go out into farmers fields to pull weeds and other things.

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-30098772

Cue Prof Sukkarieh's giant robotic weed-remover Ladybird, the farmer's new best friend, which wheels itself up and down rows of crops, analysing the vegetation, and pulling out anything that should not be there.

It's still early, but you bet there are hundreds if not thousands of scientists and technicians racing to the market.

Will it ever be cost effective?

This is what the first apple computer cost.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_I

The Apple I went on sale in July 1976 at a price of US$666.66,[8] because Wozniak "liked repeating digits" and because of a one-third markup on the $500 wholesale price.[9]

I don't know what that is in todays money, but if the Google Glasses are about $2,867.45, then I'm guessing yeah, they have several years to go, until they turn their Apple Macs, into G4 Power Macs.

This is about as good as it gets for google glass: "Google entered in a partnership with the Italian eyewear company Luxottica, owners of the Ray-Ban, Oakley, and other brands, to offer additional frame designs."

Why don't you have your grandpa try it and report back? Do record a video...lol
