Idea: Starship Captain - The internet is your universe

I think everyone has wanted to be able to hop into their own little spaceship, and travel the unlimited universe. Little did we know, the cyber universe is a universe created by us. It's been mapped even.

I'd like to create a website "ship" GUI capable of "traveling" the internet. Destinations (Websites) will be parsed, and our system will then draw a ship with similar specifications to the website. For example, shielding would be relative to the security of the site. I'm sure I don't have to explain photon torpedos!

The internet is full of little destinations. Each IP is like it's own little space ship, or possible planet! I imagine a small website with high security could be displayed as a ship with strong shields. The ship's look, and capabilities could directly reflect that of the website itself with which we could interact. So here is a fun scenario to consider.

So you're flying along in your internet spaceship, you pull up your map of the internet, select a destination, and your off!

So it might take 10 or 20 seconds of "flying", but you eventually arrive at your destination. It seems to be a small web community. "U.S.S. Sociopath Community" it reads on your ships screen. On your heads up display, you see a small ship with strong shields, and it seems to be holding a small data cache of low value information.

Because we are good people, we decide NOT to fire our photon torpedos which would overload the ship, and likely shut down all it's systems for an amount of time. But, we do want access to that information. We decide to deploy electronic warfare! First, we scan the ship to search out any vulnerabilities. If we find one, we can deploy other weapons to extract the information in various ways.

What I'm describing here I believe to be very possible. I think it wouldn't be largely difficult to program such a game that allows us as individuals to "fly" through the virtual internet, arrive at destinations, communicate with their residents, and even engage in warfare, reconnaissance, and other awesome things.

What's more, is I see no reason why players of this game couldn't see each other, which could make for very interesting scenarios in itself.

I also think it could be a fun idea to allow multiple players to be on the same ship. The game could be developed perhaps to look like a star trek ship bridge, and different players would have their own responsibilities.

Surely this idea has been around since the beginning of life on the Universe.

The asteroids that brought life to this planet were seeded by lifeforms of the most ancient kind equipped with technology we are still trying to decipher.

Chances are, they are already communicating with us in passive aggressive ways, beaming information back upto the motherships.

You don't believe me? It is absolutely possible. I do not claim it as a fact as I do with other theories which are blindingly obvious, however, if you are still stuck in the nhilist / creationist debate, be warned. There are lifeforms on this planet incredibly more intelligent than you!

Real question is why someone would want to make such a game or internet visualizer? I really don't see why a MMORPG would't fit what exactly you are looking for...

Real question would be how fun would it be to reach "space ships" who's only really consumable data consists of articles or blogs?

That one really isn't a theory. There is really no way to prove it. It is more like fantasy.

You tell me what isn't a fantasy about God, or what isn't a fantasy about perfect know-it-alls who are immaculate.

That's just my fun hypothesis to make sure all you dirt bags know exactly how infested with disease you are.

It is the perfect middle ground between the intelligent design theory and alien life theory. Abiogenesis? What a joke... in 4.6 billion years? From nothing to complex multi cellular organism overnight? I am sick of brain dead grads preaching the impossible.

All in one said,

Wow, you are asking questions as a big league creative director at a multi million dollar brain storming meeting in the white room penthouse of some high class advertising agency.

You should get paid thousands for that sort of intelligence.

the currently problem with MMORPG's is that their world is limited by the designers. no mountain you explore is really that special becasue chances are some designer spent a weekend making it. It removes the wonder. There just isn't enough variety in a game.

By allowing users to fly through the internet, the possibilities are endless. Each website we "arrive" at isn't just a ship, but also will have different destinations the ship can travel to. After all it will be traveling between links that websites have from one to the other. I'm sure taking a look at Google.com might not be that interesting, but fly your ship into the deep web, and the exploration potentia lis limitless.

Not only that, but keep in mind the tools this should could have. We could develop a function, for example, that would run a variety of security tests on a website, and so we can easily scan our target websites for vulnerabilities, and exploit them with our "ship". This can produce real-world data that is very valuable.

There is also the weapon. Say you get 10 users all working together, and they decide to fire the "Photon Torpedo" at a particular website. Well, with a sizable enough DDOS, the website will go down.

So the point is, what I'm describing is kinda fun, yes, but it also has practical uses, and it can take a universe of words, and turn it into something interesting. No longer is the web full of boring words, but ships each with their own vulnerabilities, and each with their own residents, and their own workers, and it's a living breathing universe that no game developer could wish to achieve.

Most MMORPG come with map editors which allow anyone to make the map. It is designed to allow the world to grow to large sizes but it limits the creativity one can add into the game.

Isn't there a game which is hugely popular, made with hollywood actors, which you can only play once because it follows a tight story line?

I am unsure, but there were books from the 1980s called choose your own adventure, where at the end of each mini chapter you had choices to make, and based on your choice you were instructed to jump to a different page where your story resumed.
