I think everyone has wanted to be able to hop into their own little spaceship, and travel the unlimited universe. Little did we know, the cyber universe is a universe created by us. It's been mapped even.
I'd like to create a website "ship" GUI capable of "traveling" the internet. Destinations (Websites) will be parsed, and our system will then draw a ship with similar specifications to the website. For example, shielding would be relative to the security of the site. I'm sure I don't have to explain photon torpedos!
The internet is full of little destinations. Each IP is like it's own little space ship, or possible planet! I imagine a small website with high security could be displayed as a ship with strong shields. The ship's look, and capabilities could directly reflect that of the website itself with which we could interact. So here is a fun scenario to consider.
So you're flying along in your internet spaceship, you pull up your map of the internet, select a destination, and your off!
So it might take 10 or 20 seconds of "flying", but you eventually arrive at your destination. It seems to be a small web community. "U.S.S. Sociopath Community" it reads on your ships screen. On your heads up display, you see a small ship with strong shields, and it seems to be holding a small data cache of low value information.
Because we are good people, we decide NOT to fire our photon torpedos which would overload the ship, and likely shut down all it's systems for an amount of time. But, we do want access to that information. We decide to deploy electronic warfare! First, we scan the ship to search out any vulnerabilities. If we find one, we can deploy other weapons to extract the information in various ways.
What I'm describing here I believe to be very possible. I think it wouldn't be largely difficult to program such a game that allows us as individuals to "fly" through the virtual internet, arrive at destinations, communicate with their residents, and even engage in warfare, reconnaissance, and other awesome things.
What's more, is I see no reason why players of this game couldn't see each other, which could make for very interesting scenarios in itself.
I also think it could be a fun idea to allow multiple players to be on the same ship. The game could be developed perhaps to look like a star trek ship bridge, and different players would have their own responsibilities.
