but I love it as more of a psychological game of instigation through even small things like body language instead of just the game of tactics it's meant to be.

That's interesting, never thought of it that way around.  I'm completely oblivious to body language / facial expressions (never took an interest in that - i pay attention to a person's constant features though);  for me it's the game itself.

Why i can't play online chess is not the lack of a 3D opponent but the lack of 3D figures / physical chessboard.

I'm said to be a "challenging and unorthodox" player, i think that's because i never 'learnt' the classics but play it by ear.

A few times when I was still in college I tried to play chess while intoxicated with my father who'd do the same, but his game got worse the more he drank which prompted me to correct his foolish mistakes like he used to do for me when he initially taught me how to play. It's no fun when he's not a better player than I am, so I quickly learned that I preferred versing him when we're sober.

One player in grade school who taught me some weird chess tactics used to never play to win, but to play for a draw. He'd do purposely bad moves that he knew would ensure neither side a victory. It drove me nuts.

I love chess, but I love it as more of a psychological game of instigation through even small things like body language instead of just the game of tactics it's meant to be. Playing it online is horribly boring compared to versing a person you can mess with.

Are there any video games out there yet where one takes an army of ancient style, and moves regiments up and down the field, and so?

You know, where to place the cannons, where to advance the calvary and so on?

I wouldn't play it sober either!  Lack of focus & all that..

"This is why I don't like chess. Because of its stigma as psychological game for smart snob"
But it makes for such delightful conversation!

"playing chess on the computer is fun"
But that's so two dimensional.

made me lose any interest in becoming proficient in it years ago...I could never stand the ridiculousness of someone trying to guide out my next move by the way my eyes look.

If you like board games, an excellent war strategy game is Axis and Allies. As for video games, Age of Empires is cool. And years ago, there was this game that let you try out your hand as a Latin American dictator, called Tropico. That was my favorite :D

I still play Super Mario Bros. and pitch the controller half way across the room when I die, lol. The only newer game I used to play regularly was World of Warcraft. I had a fire mage, which is essentially a walking bomb. I aimed to do as much damage and kill as many players as possible. It was the dungeon raids and intense PvP that kept me hooked. /geek
