"What are your thoughts on public speaking?"
Rehersing what you'll say in advance helps, as does the ability to detach yourself from the many, many prying eyes.
"Are you good at it?"
It's only as difficult as your nerves make it out to be. At it's core you're just reading a script. It's only personal if you have a Q&A afterwards.
"How do you best communicate or convince people?"
Try to appeal to their way of thinking, then say what you want them to know in a way that sounds like their own thoughts.
So I got invited to adjudicate/hold some speeches at Oxford IV and Cambridge IV. So I was just wondering if anyone here is experienced in formal debating or public speaking in general.
What are your thoughts on public speaking? Are you good at it? How do you best communicate or convince people?
"As for the script reading, that in itself is going to be a bad speech. It has to be interactive and engaging for the people watching."
I don't mean literally reading from a piece of paper, I mean memorizing it. Once you know what you're going to say well enough you won't be distracted by trying to think about what you ought to say, but also possess the ability to focus on it enough if you find yourself needing to tune people out. When you know the material like the back of your hand you possess the means to ad lib around it when the situation requires it.

I think having a large audience really helps you preform at your best, some of my best debating memories is when you do well in front of people, it's really not the same when you do it without or with a small audience.

In terms of convincing people I agree, the problem is often knowing how they think so that you could appeal to them.
by ReaperI've done some public speaking a few times in the past in front of a crowd of people.
I didn't mind it. I've been told I have a very nice public speaking voice.
You don't from what I've heard, in fact I don't think none Australians would last more then 30 sec listening to it.
