Have you never had the misfortune of dealing with too many fans of something you once loved, if not presently do? It's grating, and overtime their fandom begins to transfer towards your ability to enjoy the thing itself. If it's a possession, it becomes the "Everyone has one" annoyance, while if it's a show it's painful to imagine how the fans will respond to it, if not encountering such trash affecting the ability to appreciate it after it's first viewing. Shows also risk becoming aware of the fandom, which often leads to them catering to it, selling out their writing to keep them on board.
I just remember every time I'd try to watch the 10th Dr. Who, and I'd just think "Damn it, I know someone squeed at that bullshit", and overtime it has the show feel more "expected". It takes an amazing show to resist the damage idiot fans can do to it, as their gunk tarnishes the image. Watching it with even one brain dead fan present makes it like torture, like you ought to be ashamed for liking something that sells to such an audience.
