Bootable USB stick?

OK so my friend tossed me her laptop that will not start. It's Win 7 and runs the startup repair unsuccesfully. It doesn't start up in safe mode any better and a memory check showed no errors. She is sure I can fix it for her. Meh, yea right.

So I guess I can put a recover type software on an USB stick and boot from that.

What trips me up is that I run Win XP and I'm not even sure I can make an ISO to USB stick even, and if I can I'm still confused about the issues the different operative systems cause.

Anyone care to make my mind a bit clearer in this pursuit?

You're right. I'm going to ask if they have personal data on there. I kind of suspect not. They are smartphone people, they do almost everything on their phones. Its only purpose seems to be streaming movies. They bought it because it was expensive and sleek so they could use it as a status marker.

I can't start to tell you how much I want to gag over that fact.

You might delete everything by reinstalling Windows. I am not sure how Windows 7 handles old data.

If that's the case you should boot a linux distro first and make backups.

This reminds me of those people who use covers for their iPhones that have circular openings in the back to reveal the Apple logo on the phone, so that everyone can see that they're using an Apple product when they're talking on the phone.

Put  win disc in the laptop and start up. The compute will proceed to the windows  set up utility.

let it run until you see the option to install. It will then give you the option to repair installation.  If the option is presented before choosing install windows that's fine, but you might have little time to choose the repair option.

This is the repair console.  It's black screen with white text. When the flat cursor shows up write..

/chkdsk /r

if that fails the it's..

/chk dsk /r

Let it finish then it should be fine.

Homosexual.

No CD drive.

Anyway... I think I might be done anyway since I don't have their Windows key. Dammit.
