Today's modern fingernail obsession derives from the habits of royalty and aristocrats who grew their nails long and kept them free from any kind of dirt, even decorating them with jewels. This was done to show off the fact that they did not need to work with their hands, and could thus not be mistaken for peasants.
Modern manicures seem to be a holdover of these habits, although the social stature significance is long forgotten and it's simply a business now that advertises to the vanity of women, which is not hard to do.
