It's a good depiction of BPD (the mother) and DID and psychosis (the son). The second season is better.

I have only seen half of the first season and I strongly understand why anyone would kill the mother. I wonder if she is a sociopath.

No, she is classic BPD with maybe some antisocial and narcissistic features..

She has severe issues with abandonment, control, her emotions are every where and intense. Her emotions are her worse enemy. The bad part is she could completely exist in real life
