Facebook reveals news feed experiment to control emotions

"It already knows whether you are single or dating, the first school you went to and whether you like or loathe Justin Bieber. But now Facebook, the world's biggest social networking site, is facing a storm of protest after it revealed it had discovered how to make users feel happier or sadder with a few computer key strokes.

It has published details of a vast experiment in which it manipulated information posted on 689,000 users' home pages and found it could make people feel more positive or negative through a process of 'emotional contagion'.

In a study with academics from Cornell and the University of California, Facebook filtered users' news feeds – the flow of comments, videos, pictures and web links posted by other people in their social network. One test reduced users' exposure to their friends' 'positive emotional content', resulting in fewer positive posts of their own. Another test reduced exposure to 'negative emotional content' and the opposite happened.

The study concluded: 'Emotions expressed by friends, via online social networks, influence our own moods, constituting, to our knowledge, the first experimental evidence for massive-scale emotional contagion via social networks.'"

I can honestly say I've never felt happier after checking facebook so I'm curious about those individuals. It's always someone bragging about something or complaining about something. And just an FYI for all the parents out there: no one wants to see your kid's first shit/piss in a toilet. Even if it's a plastic toilet.

Yeah it's like a cesspool of people begging for attention. It's good for messaging and keeping in contact though, which is why I've kept mine. Plus you can like pages that post interesting articles.

When I scroll down the news feed, I get disgusted and cringe violently. Sometimes you get a good laugh out of it, like jerry springer but with people you actually knew.

I saw one of my buddies ex girlfriends on there, complaining about her neighbors not paying for their cable bill because she could no longer bootleg cable off of them anymore.

It's boring and repetitive for me to scroll social network newsfeeds, but I do find Facebook's positive spin tactic to be an interesting business model. Artist types tend to post fun things I enjoy, but beyond them it's usually just people talking about what they cooked, the job they have, and how awesome babies are.

Also reminds me of Neave's Lonely Tweets. It's especially fun to check on Holidays.
