This same argument can be inverted to religiosity. It's cyclical and has no final answer. Those that believe in a God are in more ways delusional because they believe something that there is no tangible proof of.

Quite bluntly I would just say mutation, like those of Intelligent design or the Darwinian Theory. 

Organisms may have spurred their own "genesis" by procreating and deliberately choosing their own partners, or adapting in unique forms. Maybe we should give even the smallest and most basic a bit more credit?

It might have, we don't know for sure. For example it is possible that another self-replicating structure similar to RNA existed, but there are no relics of its existence. It just so happened that RNA was incredibly resilient on this planet.
