The National Rifle Association is fighting proposed federal legislation that would prohibit those convicted of stalking and of domestic violence against dating partners from buying guns, according to a letter obtained by The Huffington Post.

Federal law already bars persons convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence from purchasing firearms. S. 1290, introduced by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), would add convicted stalkers to that group of offenders and would expand the current definition of those convicted of domestic violence against "intimate partners" to include those who harmed dating partners.

The people will eventually disarm themselves by emotional and moral appeals. We're all friends, no?

Could be. I see both sides of the fence. I can understand that people love guns but there are too many of them and to easy for people to get them.

I never knew it was a federal law not to own a gun if you were convicted of domestic violence. I can see that it could be scary for a victim, yet at the same time, many people own guns and I am sure they have hit people before.

But, can you go on a case by car basis?

I don't know if I agree or not. I agree that stalkers probably should not have guns; they are deranged. But domestic violence charges? A man and a woman can have a fight, and the woman can call the police. And when they show up, she can trump up what happened, and 9 times out of 10 the police are going to side with the woman. I've personally known of things happening like a woman blackening her own eye and calling the cops on a man. Stalking is pretty clear-cut, but I don't think domestic violence always is.

I think if you've ever had a jail sentence for violent behavior, or if you've been in and out of jail a few times...you should be barred from having a gun. That may not stop weapon trafficking but it makes it a little harder. Getting a gun is as easy as knowing the right person though. I've had someone randomly try to sell me a pistol in a library before.
