Attention Seeking on Facebook

Someone you know; maybe a friend or relative, posts this update on their facebook wall:

"I am sorry to all my friends and family for what I'm about to do. Love you all"

Then they quit answering their phone.

Do you-

  • Roll your eyes and feel nothing because you think they're full of shit like always, then go on with your activities like nothing?
  • Try to call and check in on them just in case they mean it this time?
  • Leave a million desperate messages on their fb trying to convince them of all the reasons they should continue to live, even though there is no proof they want to die?
  • Hope they really mean to do themselves in, and actually succeed?

This really depends on the circumstances for me. If it was a person I like, but who has a history of being dramatic on facebook and generally looking for attention anywhere they can get it, I'd still try to call or message them, but I wouldn't be worried or give them the satisfaction of getting emotional about it.

If it was someone (and this has happened with one of my friends) who hardly updates their facebook and doesn't usually talk much about themselves, then I would take it seriously. Sociopathic skills of persuasion can be used for good sometimes. I once talked a friend who really meant it out of suicide.

If it's a person whom I don't much like, whether or not they have a history of being over dramatic, I probably wouldn't do anything.

 That's what I would do. ^

Not because I think they're full of shit, but simply because I seriously doubt I would even give a shit.

I'd likely assume it was a hoax at first, and if it turns out it wasn't... well... shit happens.

I guess call them if they're close friends or a family member

Otherwise I would call mom and ask her what she thinks about it

My borderline neighbour did this three weeks ago. I sincerely hoped that she would actually make a decent attempt at suicide this time, but she didn't. She took 50mg of Valium (she's obese, so that wouldn't have done shit to her, and even if she had passed out, she wouldn't have died unless there was something else in her system that would've shut down her central nervous system), then put a few half-hearted scratches on her upper arms and called an ambulance.

It was utterly pathetic.

Post a reply of "fucking emo you don't have the balls"(with no capitalization or punctuation because you can't be bothered with it), unfriend them on all social media, and block all calls and texts from their phonenumber.
