I hear that otherwise intelligent and well intentioned Xtians have similar problems digesting courses where the knowledge base is built on evolutionary theory.
Hmmm... not exactly the same thing as dissonance, imo. Dissonance happens to either/ or thinkers. I tend to process holistically more often than not.
As an anthro major I found it challenging (but still doable) to frame each lesson as an exercise in Cultural/Ethical Relativism. My philosophy prof was a staunch Roman Catholic and a moral absolutist. There was no way to please the guy. I had to choose between swallowing his doctrines whole or lying to him...which I did. But I was also unable to lie well enough to please him. Better luck with the next religious nut, I guess.
Cladograms are a great alternative to syllogisms. No need to split hairs for the sake of picking a side and then get all uncomfortable about whether or not it's the right one ;)
For the Xtians who can't deal with Darwin, dissonance is probably what they're experiencing.
Um... the process of learning and assimilating any Cultural Metanarrative into one's worldview/ way of relating is similar whether that socialization comes with an alignment to a religion, ethnic group, political party, or craftsman's guild, etc. At least the process is similar in that any and all of those belief/ knowledge structures are intricate and learned over time. Whether the belief/ knowledge structure is 'right', 'wrong' or indifferent, you can't just knock the whole house of cards down overnight and stick something else in its place.
by SystematicEverything in moderation, including knowledge.
I think this is the only thing you've said I've disagreed with. I hate to be cliché, but knowledge is power. And power is a potential waiting to be tapped whenever needed...so, the more the better. Pile it on.
Oh yeah. No original sayings for me tonight.
by TurncoatMine's from Algolagnia, so it's actually more about me perceiving pain improperly than idolizing some sort of idea.
It's always on, and it's not always a good thing.
Algolagnia? It's 'ALWAYS' on. So are you saying that at any given time you feel pain you get sexually aroused?
I mean, I understand the concept of getting sexually aroused through pain, I think it's very interesting and sexy. But always on?
Wow that's kinda hard to imagine. That must be hard to handle.
by TurncoatIt just gives me a different reason to avoid or grit through pain.
It's one thing to make a loud yelp when pain is struck, it's another thing entirely to make a compulsive laugh or an orgasmic moan.
Would you make an orgasmic moan if met with a car accident?.... Just wondering
