Weird topic, I was talking about Amway and MLMs with a friend tonight. I've never been involved but we were laughing at people we know who have been. People get so obsessed in the beginning like they found Jesus or something, and then it quietly fades away and their garages are stuffed with old product for years. That being said, there can be money to be made if you get in early into the right one.   

Generally though, they're for people who can't make $ in the real life. lol 

Amway. Was under some heat back in the day because of there business structure. It was considered a pyramid. Unless they have restructured there business plan. I would make sure to research it. It could be a real money pit if you don't put 110% effort into it.
