When going to lunch today I saw a schizophrenic homeless man have an very animated argument with a parking meter. The coworkers I was with thought he was going to totally flip out and attack it. Most of them kept going as fast as they could, a couple watched him from a distance, and I stood there looking at him hoping he would wig out. After a few minutes a nice policeman helped him into a squad car and drove away.

Earlier this evening, I read about The Smiling Man.  If that was you in the story, what would you do? Run away? Try talking to him? Start dancing with him?

I would tell him that the children and the old lady across the street are secret agents from the government following him waiting for him to be vulnerable, and if he doesn't attack them first he'll get kidnapped and used for his genius, then killed. Then I would give him a knife in hand videotape the lulz for liveleak.

Honestly, being the "Smiling Man" in this sounds like something I would do just to fuck with people. If he came around I'd probably do what he was doing and wander in the same general direction for a while.

That is hilarious if it's real. If someone did that to me I'd probably feel a bit odd about the situation but I think I would just keep walking, occasionally looking at him.

Did you happen to overhear what the argument was about (assuming it was coherent?).

Like all self-respecting citizens of the free world I would tend to side with the schizophrenic over the parking inspector even if the schizophrenic had just taken a crap inside the parking inspector's lunchbox.

EDIT: ESPECIALLY if the schizophrenic had just taken a crap inside the parking inspector's lunchbox.

The parking meter was a ho. He called it a bitch a few times. He kept asking it "Why?". And he said he wasn't going away. The rest would only make sense to other schizophrenics.

I could understand that if he had a car, but a homeless man was angry with a parking meter? Are you sure he wasn't just unwashed and unkempt? Didn't own a rusty van or something?

I had a fight with a parking meter once over it eating some of my quarters. I got them back.
