parkour is different from freerunning

parkour is about maintaining movement and getting from point a to point b as fast as possible

freerunning is practically street gymnastics, it's more for show than actually serving a function (ie most people in that video doing flips and other non functional moves are freerunning)

tried it myself when i was in my early teens, got bored of it and not nimble enough to do it anymore

Must be a great workout, no?

It looks really cool but all I can think of is the numerous bones I'd smash and my impending wheel chair if I tried it. Apparently there are gyms where you can learn/practice this stuff. I'd really like to be able to run up walls as a surprise move. lol

it's more cardiovasular and balance training than strength training, rather than use strength to move past obstacles you use the speed you've accumulated

It's a good workout and it's not all that dangerous unless you start running on top of buildings and stuff. The nice thing about parkouring is that it's free and you get to choose where to do it yourself.

It's not too late to start again :)

I used to do it between classes at college and at night to clear my head. My fear of heights got in the way of some of it, and I wasn't really good at making it appear flashy, but otherwise it was a good way to practice speed and precision. How I understand the environment around me changed once I picked it up initially in high school.

Since graduating (more like a year before that), I switched to mostly just riding my bike and using a treadmill for my core sources of exercise. I ought to re-adopt parkour as a more common thing to do again.

When I first picked it up I thought the two were pretty much the same, Parkour just being the original french name for it, and that street gymnastics had it's own name entirely (with some desperate-to-sound bad ass name for it).

Wiki at least seems to confirm that they are different from one another. It was weird to practice parkour before it became as popular in the States.

Agree with this, except that if you enjoy it you'll very likely get to up the danger element all the time. I used to do a mix of parkour/freerunning with an awesome gang of friends. That part, of uping your game and always trying more difficult, impressive stuff, and competing with the others, was the best part for me.

You've done parkouring? I guess it goes with bouldering and the other hobbies. I never thought of it as very competitive, but I guess it depends on the group.
