job interview questions

I have a 3 hour job interview over the phone on Friday. If I don't know something I was planning on just saying "I don't know." Trying to lie won't work. Anyone have any better ideas?

Care to give some idea what kind of job it is? I think there are better ways to finesse that answer.

It's an IT job.

that's a bad move

it would of been better to say how interesting their question was but unfortunately have forgotten or lost the paper of what you were going to say so you decline to answer to prevent an impulsive and incorrect response to then save their time and effort by continuing to the next question

saying "i don't know" would give them an excuse to claim you aren't intelligent or educated enough

where as everyone can make mistakes though you appear organized by having it ready yet accidentally lose it or forgot and would happily answer it later on at the end of the interview (or even better an hour later if they let you) after you researched and given more time to think of an answer

probing their empathy is better than showing that you're not educated or intelligent

 that's manipulation not blatant lying

IT eh, so it will probably be pretty specific questions. Three hours is brutal - ugh

I say fluffy shit like.." I don't have direct (or much) experience in that area, but I'm a quick study and would want to collaborate with others more seasoned with that." Or I can't give you a specific answer as I'd need to get in to better understand the specifics of  your organization and the opportunities and challenges within etc…"

blahblah.. you get the idea. - just show you give a shit and are strategically minded, willing to learn etc.

good luck

they will or should take note that you also tried to avoid answering it so if you are mentally able to do it you could delay the question to be at the end if they allow it so you have some more time to respond

it's better than being unable to answer it's not going to be perfect though

you can't say that you don't have experience in that area that's more excuses for them to not hire him

he needs to try and avoid the question without giving away lack of knowledge, experience, intelligence at the first go

by trying again it can also make you appear committed to make an effort

it depends on if they allow it to be delayed and or if he can convince them

but it's better than nothing

also mildly exaggerating the truth on answers that he can complete can slightly make them less prone to worry about what he avoids to answer or can't answer (but not answering will be noted)
