I personally use pre-paid phones and phone cards instead of plans. Costs the same for me to call long distance as it would to call my neighbor, but being a cheap phone, it lacks apps. Texting costs 0.3 minutes per sent and received, but in my case that's not a big deal. Minutes can be reloaded online as well.

It's pretty basic, but it does the job and saves me quite a bit of money, considering how little I use my cell phone as is.

Mostly saying, there is a cheap solution anyone can use already.

Edit: Lol nevermind, it can do long distance but apparently they boot you from using it when you leave the States. How dumb. There's probably one that doesn't do that, but yes, you want a nice phone.

I guess if where you went had a phone just like it, you could just have more than one cell phone. Still no monthly fee if that's possible.

Like you said, your phone is cheap. I want to use my nice phone. Business men and women who are traveling the world to do business will want to have a nice phone.

I think Wal-Mart's Straight Talk has an international pre-paid plan that can do this. All you need is an unlocked GSM phone.

If your phone can do wi-fi, and you always have access to it, you can set it up to do VOIP.

Terrible investment. VoIP is the future, as soon as global infrastructure supports it.
