This technology at its base doesn't seem very impressive. As we've discussed, reading human emotions isn't that difficult. But if you take a deeper look at the possibilities....
Having a computer that can rapidly read and identify emotions based on facial expressions has a multitude of implications. To start with all you autistic fuckers will be able to interact with regular people in a more natural way.
Secondly, if this technology becomes sufficiently advanced it will be able to tell whether you are lieing or telling the truth. As it's a machine it will more easily identify the tell tale micro-expressions you are trying to hide. combine that with an ability to eventually read heartrate, persperation, and breath pace and you have a highly advanced lie detection system.
This could eventually be used by TSA Agents who want to augment existing terrorist activity monitoring systems: http://gcn.com/Articles/2003/01/23/TSA-set-to-test-biometric-systems-at-20-airports.aspx
I see a future where cops can ask you questions and be able to have a truthful answer simply by reading your face. What happens in the future when we are no longer capable of lieing? or will we simply get better at it?
What do you guys think? and what other applications could this technology have? for better or worse.
