Jack's masterpiece.

Each time I see this picture of Mary Kelly it's as if I was looking at a painting of one the great masters except that it was done with living (well obviously dead) parts.

It's funny because I'm usually not sensitive to art.

Mary Kelly

Credit where credit is due this image was altered in Photoshop & colored see details here:

What about this picture enticed you.

What is difference here than someone gunned down in the street. Would that not be equally as appeasing, if not why?

Honestly I don't know. I've always found it fascinating visually speaking.

Then I read about Jack The Ripper and his deeds and it's as if his goal was to produce this scene.

There had been an escalation in the way he mutilated his victims until Mary Kelly which was this one and who had, of all the victims, the most extensive damage done to her. She's widely believed to be his final victim so it's as if he was trying to recreate something that he saw in his mind all along and once done he stopped his killing spree. Hence the title of this thread.

That's the way I see it anyway.

I actually prefer the original image to the photoshop version. Adding the colour makes it look unrealistic to me. I'm not sure why, as the colours all look correct, perhaps it's just their vividness against the darker background makes it look a bit gaudy.

There's also a sepia version. I used this version because it's a high res picture but granted I could've used the original.

There's also the fact that the added colors enhance the painting-like quality of it but it's true he went a bit overboard with those saturated colors. Maybe I should desaturate it a bit and re-post it.

What do you consider the masterpiece? The subject of the photo itself, or the composition of the photo immortalizing it?

I agree, that is a masterpiece. The tearing through of supple flesh, the ambiguous hint of bone through carnage. How could one not shudder with ecstasy?

It must be that untouched left leg. It makes her look almost demure.

The shading is odd, especially underneath the left hand. It looks far more natural in the original:

That's a very interesting question. I would be tempted to say the subject of the photo but I wasn't there when this picture was taken perhaps I wouldn't have felt that way for whatever reason.

That said the angle the policeman chose, the quality of the picture (or there lack of I should say), the fact that it's one the first crime scene photos, all those facts I'm sure enhance the impact of the image.

For the curious, someone attempted to reconstruct her face:

But I think he made her too hot.

Also here's a view from another angle of the first picture (you'll recognize the table):
