This is sad but true. Abuse was widespread and the most chilling part of this is that the CIA actively tested on the patients of state facilities. I know someone personally who this happened to, I'm sure you can imagine how well it was taken to be gay in Tennessee in the 1960's.

Psychiatry is so driven by politics it's just a joke. Gays got "normal" by organized protest. Shrinks have a terrible legacy of lobotomy, shock treatment and denial of freedom.

You want to runaway and not be a good slave? Then you're mentally ill, and your diagnosis is Draupetomania.

You want to be a disobedient kid and have rights? Then you're mentally ill, and your diagnosis is Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

You want to not act your age, and not be an obedient kid? You think you're entitled to make your own decisions? Then you're mentally ill, and your diagnosis is Conduct Disorder.

Psychiatry today is no better than it was 50 years ago. It's still overly politically influenced, and its still completely made up by a congress of "doctors" analyzing people, their enviroments, their behaviors, etc... It's not a science yet, and its certainly not quite what it could be.
