hidden in tv shows
I remember being 11 years old and actually the map projection issues were brought up. We got to compare maps to globes and we had several map projections in our world atlas (I still have it, just went to fetch it). Still with all the world showing we had a size distorted map, not the Mercator one though. I remember suggesting a different type of map that would solve a few issues but got shot down because I was a child. Today I know exactly what I meant does exist and is called the Winkel projection map. I realized its downsides, but for a mere representation of the world it would have worked.
Today it is not too unusual. IMO it should be standardized for when you just show the world as such.

This was incredibly annoying on a laptop and fairly easy when I moved to a properly sized monitor.
