Hi everyone!

I'm about to read the novel 1984 by George Orwell. I know it's quite a popular novel so I thought we could discuss it here.

I was always under the impression that book club discussion followed a rather rigid sequence... Read>>>Discuss. Not the other way around? Maybe I was wrong shrugs

1984 is a fun read but the books themes do tend to make mentally unwell readers even crazier.

Read the book as a work of science fiction. Do not read the book as a work of social commentary.

The main thing I remember from that book is that an organization full of people can get rather mechanical and impersonal.

It sounded less duh in my head...

So far the author hasn't done a very good job at drawing me into the book...

I didn't really read it for the story, more for the interesting themes of social constructions, state control and human behavior. This is heresy, but I did think it was a bit boring at times.

I read it awhile ago, I think it was one of the ones I felt was a bit too over the top with its moralizing. And I think it's difficult to mix a romance story with social commentary, because if your characters are just falling in love for the author to be able to make a point, then you don't really care about their relationship to begin with. Or at least I didn't.

And you should still read Atlas Shrugged. You'd probably like it better anyway (:

I read it and would love to discuss it. About the romance, Obrien, the government agent who tortures the main character and his girlfriend, is the most interesting character in the book. He was so brilliant and devious. I could have fallen in love with him.

Maybe I should read it again.

If I finish it while this topic is still on the front page I'd like to discuss it too.

Discussing things is fun.
