If you want to read a philosophical sci-fi book that addresses life and death, borrowed time, utopias, problems with perfection, romantic relationships, different phases in living and their importance, the source of curiosity within us humans, read The city and the stars by Arthur C. Clarke.

I really enjoyed the book. It's about an utopian city where everything is made to last, people have achieved immortality by being reborn over and over again, while picking only happy memories from their previous lives. The utopia is governed by a central computer and everyone is happy, except for the main character. The citizens of Diaspar, the utopian city I mentioned before, all slowly regain memories from their previous lives but the main character does not. As it turns out, he's the only one in the city who has never lived a previous life and is in essence a completely new and unique person whereas everyone else is thousands of years old.

It's interesting because the main character is introduced like any other citizen of Diaspar, follows the culture and enjoys the same things everyone else enjoys. The only difference is that he wants out of the utopian city whereas everyone else is horribly afraid of leaving. Nobody really knows about the outside world because nobody has memories dating before the birth of the city, but the consensus is that there's nothing but desert out there.

There's a lot of adventure, cool science fiction and really interesting philosophical problems. So read it.
