Which parts are science?
Which parts are pseudoscience?
Which parts do you believe in?
Which parts are fact?
To start discussion I believe in chemical deficiencies that can be fixed with chemical supplements.

Isn't that ^ more psychiatry vs. psychology? I believe in chemical imbalances in the brain to an extent. I don't know if CBT would be considered science but it's a form of therapy I think helpful -- doesn't dwell on drudging up the past.
To me, Freud=vomit.
(Hyper, I'm curious, only if you want to share of course, are you diagnosed with any disorders? What brings a smart, witty woman such as yourself here?)
edit - I don't know how to use block quotes?
I was more interested in discussing psychology than myself but sure. I was diagnosed with BPD when I was approximately 16. I am here because I find this site interesting.
I agree with Edvard that psychology is a potentially useful tool if you want it to be. I've never studied Freud but my superficial response to what I have read about his theories is that he tries to fit everything into a sexual paradigm and that's very limited.
Edited because I think I was actually closer to 16 when I got that diagnosis. 14 was when they said I had depression and tried to give me pills that made me feel like shit.
Thanks for answering, Hyper. Hope I didn't derail your thread. Isn't 16 quite young to get a diagnosis like BPD? I'm not questioning you, just saying - wow!
I agree that therapy/psychology can be useful. I'm astounded though by the number of quacks counselling people and the docs that are so free with the prescriptions.
I don't like Freudian theories (from my limited knowledge of them) because of the focus on opposite sex parent dynamics. I think it's weird. Anyhow, I think you have a great sense of humour and enjoy (most of) your posts. ;)
If I had to analyze it I'd say I got diagnosed because I acted incredibly stupid and self destructive, all of the pills they tried just made me crazier, and my parents kept taking me to therapy even though I just sat there for an hour being evasive.
Do you know anything about Carl Jung by the way? I haven't read his stuff either but I've read some stuff that was slightly influenced by his thought process. I'm kind of in the mood to look into that now.
Thanks for the compliment and you seem cool too.
My take on Freud is that almost everything he proposed turned out to be complete horseshit except for the id/ego/superego theory and the defense mechanisms that we all still talk about.
OP: do you presently consider yourself bipolar? I ask because my girlfriend was diagnosed as bipolar in her teens but now that she is off the medication she is a "normally" functioning human being. She thinks that when she was diagnosed, her doctors might have been more interested in pushing drugs than actually helping her.
"Do you know anything about Carl Jung by the way?"
Not much, I studied him in philosophy but I was mostly high then, so I can only remember little. But it's funny you mentioned him - a few months ago I was googling him because of a dumb religious debate I was in and I liked his take. I think I will look into him a little more too.
This is pretty cool http://www.sofia.edu/content/transpersonal-pioneers-carl-jung
And @ the other Richard tell your girlfriend I sympathize with her and that it's really fucked up to experiment on kids by giving them psychological drugs. I think I have some sort of PTSD from being drugged and interrogated by strangers.
