question for the sociopaths here, how big a tool is the appealing to pity ?  Is it something you specifically think up or is it an innate function ?

It's not an innate function. It's simply a 'tool' chosen for manipulative purposes to suit that specific situation.

There are many different techniques one can use to manipulate people. Using the most effective one simply requires discernment.
