How much would this bog down load time?

As long as you don't HAVE to use it. The only reason I deal with the dark colors is that the posts alternate between black and grey (Plus it LOOKS GOOD). With that gone, there is just mush left.

Are you adding a feature that will allow us to create our own chatroom?

This would make a good background image. Though, I'm not sure if it will interfere with the text too much.

I'm new here and all, but I think the background images on a forum is a bad idea. The current color scheme makes everything clear and visible. I like seeing text.

You are the one who made/operates this site, correct? I like what you've done with the place. My only suggestion is maintain the less flash, more functionality mindset that seems to have fueled your inspirations thus far.
