What are your guys' opinion on holidays?
I'm not American so Thanksgiving means nothing to me, I feel badly for the natives who got screwed. Needless to say, I don't celebrate it. Last year I did cook since all of us foreigners were stuck w/o anything to do on that day, but I don't really follow it or care.
"My" religion follows the old calendar so Xmas doesn't apply either, so I don't care about the 24th and the 25th either.
New Years is big tho, love it. :)
I celebrate "our" Xmas out of respect for my culture, our traditions and my ancestors really. They fought so that we would have a cultural identity today, I appreciate that. So I guess Orthodox xmas is my thanksgiving day, kinda.
I think holidays are good for cultural traditions and continuity.
And taking paid days off from work.
I have an idea to add a new holiday tradiction in December, to celebrate the Bill of Rights from Dec. 15 to Dec. 24.
(And the 14th Amendment on Dec. 25, to promote Constitutional history and educational outreach.)
Since there has been backlash against Christmas hype, and against politically correctness and Kwanzaa, why not have a holiday that makes it okay again to celebrate the traditions passed down from European govt leaders to America?
Since Kwanzaa celebrates 7 principles from Dec. 26 to Jan 1. Why not ADD a similar tradition instead of protesting?
I'll do stuff at others insistence, but I don't really celebrate things if it's just me. Parties can be a fun break from repetition, but I'm not really the "hosting" type, nor am I driven or insistent enough to force a celebration.
I prefer to celebrate holidays with whoever I'm dating at the time, using that as a chance to study who I'm with's responses toward them. Campy holiday shows/films can be a treat if with someone who knows how to laugh at the little things, like Christmas Comes to Pac-Land. Little things, like breaking open a bottle of champagne, can add to it as well.
