How do you stay calm when being yelled at?

So hard to think of what to say to sidetrack the issue being addressed or cooling someone off. I try to act as friendly as possible but even then it's hard my voice gets shaky and I get nervous. And I zone out totally. Dissociate. I often dissociate or black out in situations of emotional crisis.

Its hard to come up with lies, or white lies when being yelled at too. You have to be able to stay cool, think of something believable and manage to build a good rapport with the guy interrogating you pretty much.

I find somehow it usually works out but phew how stressful it is!

A wise counselor in a workshop I went to said to schedule a time to work out conflicts AFTER the people have gone thru the initial blow up. If you deal with this guy a lot, have an agreement that when things go wrong you will set an appt to meet to work it out, possibly with a helper if needed. If your communication styles clash this much, have an agreement with your friends how to work with you.

In general if you are lying and creating these headaches bound to blow up in your face, can you work out the conflicts causing you to lie. Is there a way to avoid this, if you know you dont like it.

I'm always calm when I get yelled at. Often times I find it amusing that the other person lost their cool and is so angry that they're yelling at me. I have to stop myself from smirking at them, which has been known to piss them off even more because they think I'm being condescending (which I am).

I'm not saying I don't lose my cool at times too, but usually, the angrier the other person gets, the calmer I become.

Generally, I don't get angry or anything when someone is screaming at me.  Of course, this just makes it escalate, but most anger from others is just crap that I really don't care about.  I don't know.  I find a calmer response is generally better than one out of anger.  Besides, you are more weighted, and seem more plausible when you are the one not yelling.  XP

I just stop listening lol because I already know what they are mad about so I focus on being remorseful lol

I make them more angry by not responding to the fact they are shouting, so for example if i was, say, eating, and someone came over and started shouting, i would just keep eating whilst talking to them normally. Its surprisingly effective at getting people to give up

It's just words, dude... at a loud volume.  Words can't hurt you.  Chill.

Instead of zoning out focus on one thing instead. I just sort of stare at them in there eye and just nod with them. its a lot easier to let people believe they won than to make them think you won with small things that you really don't care about. Now if it's big try to get a mediator in the argument
