"I feel like making a topic addressing the current issue on the forum. As most of you probably know there was some debate about banning people from the forum, which resulted in people getting info about having their ips logged. Most people here seem to have a problem with that. Personally, I don't care either way since I am behind a proxy."
I don't really care if people running this place can see IPs, but it is another matter altogether if someone manages to hack the place and nab them. But yes, proxies do fix this I guess.
"The issue among people right now, from what I understand, is that Luna didn't say anything about logging ips when it started."
It's not just that nothing was said, it's that we were told the opposite. She claims to have only implemented it recently, but can we really trust that?
"To focus on the actual issue at hand, the forum seems to be in a state of change. Spatial Mind will be given moderator status and the forum will most likely start to follow more conventional guidelines."
I'm hoping he lets the place stay as is instead of trying to change things. It'd be the high ground approach if you ask me, as this place is fun for it's lack of moderation. Some cases might call for some moderation, but as little as possible would be nice. It takes restraint to not abuse your power, and I respect that sort of restraint.
As much as things in the past may have gone wrong related to Spatial, he strikes me as, mostly, having a "boys will be boys" outlook of this place. I just hope it stays that way.
"I personally don't mind, if it has to be done. Change isn't always necessarily bad. New people can start having more fun and the older members can find other forums to enjoy."
I mostly mind if this place just becomes another every day forum. There's millions of those. This place is nice for being so chaotic, even if others may seek to take advantage of said freedoms in ways I may find annoying.
"From what I understand most of the community seems to be against the change. A lot of petty insults have been thrown both ways and nobody seems able to take a few steps back to consider the opposing opinion. I'm not going to point the finger at anyone here. I can somewhat relate to both sides."
Very against the change, but I suppose if it's a matter of picking between an abrasive philosopher and someone who demands people like her, the choice is obvious. At least Spatial is content with knowing some people might not like him, and has invented a system for himself to cool off that seems to work for him.
"I'm not sure which side to address first so I'll flip a coin and...Luna. Luna created this forum and is hosting it. As such, she has every right to do whatever she wants with the forum. Unless someone else is willing to create and host a forum it will stay like that. I believe Luna's voiced her issue with the current situation: spamming and hacking."
Hacking is why it's good to have someone who can pull the strings of admin and moderation. Spamming... it's annoying, but it's not the first time we've ever had to deal with it here. The ability to revert this place for a former time has been quite helpful.
Yes it is her right to do as she wishes, but, call me crazy, but being told this place is one thing, and then later see it's another? It builds false expectations. She's entitled to do as she wishes, but we are also entitled to say what we think instead of become Stepford Smilers to appease.
"The other issue I believe was respect. Despite helping the people here out by creating and hosting this forum she's not given any credit for it. I can relate. I've had some projects where I was expected to be a working horse despite doing it all out of my own good will, so I ended shutting the projects down eventually."
I respect her for what she's done, but, as I mentioned in another topic, "bringing a gun to a knife fight" doesn't sit well with me. She could have very well argued instead of abusing the power she has, but instead stooped to the level of admin powers. If she wants to be treated like an equal, she should operate under the same channels as everyone else. If she wants to be respected (like she formerly was by many more than now), she should have let her work speak for itself instead of demanding it from people. Seriously, insult = ban? I understand that was said while in a "bad mood", but does that really excuse it?
"Community. I believe the community's problem is control. The community hates control, to be more precise."
Sociopath forum. Makes sense if you ask me.
"The community consists of a lot of stubborn people for whom it is import to be on top of whatever situation they are in."
Can't speak for everyone, but in my own case, it's mostly that I like everyone being equals in discussion, where only their words have power. I am not a fan of censorship, and seeing any form of it come here makes it feel like something I once enjoyed and took for granted is being wrestled away from us.
"Introducing admins/ip logging/control will make the people feel threatened or subdued."
Again, something to worry about in case someone breaches the security here. Imagine if a hacker nabbed admin/mod powers?
"To further my point, one of the characteristic traits of a sociopath is: "Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest;""
Yes, so lets throw structure at them, that will totally make them act like well mannered human beings. It's more likely to antagonize them, and make this place seem almost paradoxical.
"On a forum like this it will most likely result in the one thing they can do to oppose: hacking and/or spamming."
Precisely. I won't be joining in on that, but that won't stop others.
"The community also seems to want complete anonymity. This is in order to be able to talk about themselves honestly without the fear of being exposed. The fear might range from complete paranoia to someone other than Luna getting access to the forum logs."
Speaking as a paranoid person, and a person who likes to watch people sabotage themselves socially instead of being jumped through the computer... yeah, I prefer the place being mostly a social game instead of one with behind the scenes actions that could incriminate.
I want to stay here, the place offered things I didn't see from other forums, but if this place just becomes another generic forum... I might become bored.
Ah well, it's not like I have any real sway here. Even if I left, others would replace me.
