mimicking and modeling (one's behavior after another), i believe mean the same, aren't they synonyms? 

Mimicking would be shallow mirroring without understanding, modelling would be taking inspiration and internalizing.

My take, not based on references or definitions:

Mimicking is a direct imitation of another, while modeling is adjusting your behaviors to be similar to another.

mimicry is low level impersonation, modeling is a higher level understanding of the model that can evovle with its underlying principals.

modeling is more akin to empathy, to put yourself in the shoes of another where as mimicry is just that, trying to be exactly what you see without understanding it. 

I would rather go for for the distinction between assimilation and adjustment (as per making one a part of yourself and making the other a presentable image of yourself).

Superficial distinctions apparently make the whole difference in the world of superficial people.
