once your "magic" becomes understood... like magnets or gravity, it's no longer of the realm of magic but of the study of natural phenomenon... 

as for magic itself working, it's usually just chance, placebo effect, con artistry, or some actual scientically testable force at work.

Im trying to come up with the most wicked combination. Up until now the most terrible creature I have found is the autistic sociopath witch. I am not yet sure what kind of creatures loom at the end of my journey but I am already afraid at this point.

 If you want to kill it, use ice not fire.  Sometimes it's a phoenix.

Save its tears in case you ever meet a basilisk though.

I once knew an elemental mage. He could vanquish the evil like nothing else. It is unfortunate that he had mental illnesses and is now locked up in the loony bin.
