I wonder if you are still living with your family. If not, it would be easier to refuse to see the therapist. M.E. advised people not to get a diagnosis of sociopathy because it could follow them through life. I had a lot of "professional treatment" when I was a lot younger. I had one good one and the others bad. I wouldn't trust them to keep things confidential. I saw a YouTube video where a therapist told a young man she would keep the whole session confidential. But the whole session was on YouTube. Confidential?

I live alone and not with family currently. Im curious to see what the session entails but will be keep my wits about me. I'm not a very trusting person so will ensure my guards are fully up whilst trying to be as honest as possible.

REVISED: don't know if you meditate, but I added that below...

Dear Zack: One of my few friends who had a good relation with his longterm doctor and became independent, got there with books. The doctor read a lot of books, and would recommend some he felt his client/patient would grow from.

The therapist should facilitate you working through your issues with both parents, your family, and any other relations you have that 'trigger' your responses to surface.

So that is the process regardless which venue you use; it's a lifelong process.

If you can open up to people here, then use this in addition to whatever therapists you work with. I also look for mediators or counselors your family can open up and work with, if it gets to the point of reconciling in context with others.

Some books that might give helpful insights with one reading:

"Change your Brain Change your Life" by Dr. Daniel Amen

"Healing" by Dr. Francis MacNutt

* "Miracle of Mindfulness" "Being Peace" or any short books by Thich Nhat Hanh. EX: http://houstonprogressive.org/9prayers.html

His books are short and can be read in the bookstore. The point is using meditation to reflect on the cause and control of emotional reactions like anger.

Any books on past life regression therapy, such as Dr. Weiss who studies this as science based therapy. Most therapies are based on forgiving and letting go, but it is the Buddhist past like karma and Christian generational healing methods that recognize issues from past generations and not just from this lifetime.

If reading these books triggers ideas or issues for you, that is worth working that out with your family. Any emotional conflicts that come up are likely connected.

Hi Emily, Thank you very much for the book suggestions and also the advice. I will look into these titles and maybe pick some up. I don't meditate but i'm open to ideas and will take it on board. I appreciate your time, thanks.
