What part of the brain turns this off?

In cases such as resorting to human cannibalism to survive, or this story on eating cockroaches vs. people with such nasty associations in our minds we'd have to be starving to death:

What part of the brain affects such decisions? Aren't those associations emotional?

Where someone might opt to starve to death instead of eat from a dead person?

Where someone could saw off a foot in order to escape and survive?

Is this just survival mode in general, or does it involve some brain functions that differ substantially between empathetic or sociopathic minds.

Yeah, I think morals and emotions have a lot to do with smth like that.

Anyway, I'd never eat someone/a dead body/something from my body just to keep myself alive a little longer... I'd like to go with some dignity.

After certain points of hunger, pride and dignity I'd imagine would be the last things on your mind.

I'm glad I've never had to experience the mental shifts associated with harsh survival.

Emily, i would wager that you have NEVER been close to starving... otherwise, the thought of eating insects or even another human would not be that terrible an idea. you have these animal survival instincts for a reason, when they kick in you are making a choice between life or death, not icky and yummy...

there was a book called 127hours about a hiker in Utah that cut his own arm off after it was crushed under a boulder when he was out there alone miles from anyone, he had to choose between cutting his arm off or dieing there... these are not uncommon stories... the human will to survive is one of the most powerful drives we have, the issue is simply that you as a person living in a first world country have never actually had to survive in that manner, we as humans have developed support systems to care for each other...

survival is not empathic vs sociopathic... its a basic evolutionary drive that pushes us toward survival. and it exists in all humans.even if domestication has weakened it in most....

i'd much rather eat you than stop living. i hear humans have a consistancy similar to pig... and again, i would wager you've never went more than 5 days without food...

If I had a choice between fucking that fat delusional australian loner who comes here or cutting through my dick with a rusty bread knife, in the blink of an eye, I would most certainly choose the latter!

Wrong there, I've been through more than 5 days without any food. I'd probably eat from a fresh corpse if I knew rescue was on the way and I'd otherwise die or something.
