 Get a laptop and a $100 TB external drive.

Wait for a friend to give up their desktop and you can get that for free as a backup. Until you decide to give it away for the same reasons...

Desktop or laptop? Keep in mind I'll be in the military

 For me go for a laptop given your situation. Make sure you get at least 6gb ram and ideally an I7 Processor or at least an I5. Go for a large HHD (1TB+). That should be fair for most of your needs but if you really want to play high end games you need to spend big to get a capable future proofed laptop!

For me I use my laptop for graphic designs, and video rendering so i5, 6gb ram and a 1TB HDD is fine.

 Geez...am I the only one on here who doesn't play video games? I tried Halo once and it made me want to cry!

Zack if you do graphics, the website I found for photo effects contests is back up. I had been hanging out there since June, when it got transferred to new owners. There are cool digital illustrators on there; I was hoping to find some to help Luna with her projects. http://www.worth1000.com It's a bit addictive if you have time.

I plan on just enjoying the decreases in prices for current generation console stuff. Easy to have a large collection if you buy them all dirt cheap.

I'm currently enjoying the crysis series on my pc. I don't have the third one yet, and the second one rubs very poorly on my rig.

 very true, I have been playing a lot of GTA V at the moment. Well worth picking up when it drops a little
