 Have you read Robert A. Heinleins "Stranger in a Strange Land"? Its a sci-fi book but he uses that premise "thou art god" as a central plot point.

 Yes. In fact, I was a member of a pagan group called Church of All Worlds based on the book. We used to say "Thou art God" and "Drink deep" to each other. The main character was a human who had been raised on Mars so his socialization, which was way ahead of ours, was Martian. He could "grok wrongness" (know intuitively they were wrong) in things and will them into nonexistance. It could be the basis of a philosophy that justifies serial killers.
